Fred Zeller is CEO of the German cooperative SZVG, Suedzucker’s majority shareholder, since 1995 and managing director of the beet growers association VSZ since 2010. He holds a degree in agricultural economics of the Technical University Munich, where he remained for two years after his studies as a postgraduate researcher at the Institute for Agricultural Policy. Humberto Jasso

Executive President, Mexican Sugar Chamber

Humberto Jasso is Executive President of the Mexican Sugar Chamber, which represents the sugar mill companies that transform cane into sugar in Mexico before the Government, cane growers, labor unions, abroad, and in the defense of sugar as a healthy ingredient.

Since February 2021 he also holds the position of Vice President for International Trade in Mexico´s umbrella National Agricultural Council (CNA), which represents the Mexican private sector in Agribusiness.

Before joining the Sugar Chamber in 2011, Humberto Jasso worked for 22 years in the Trade Ministry of Mexico, and participated in the original negotiation of the NAFTA, as well as in the negotiation of many international trade Agreements signed by Mexico with the European Union, Japan and many Latin American countries.

Humberto Jasso lives in Mexico City with his wife and two sons. He has a BA Degree in Economics from Yale College and a Masters Degree in Economic Development from Cambridge University.

Jack Roney

Director of Economics and Policy Analysis, American Sugar Alliance

The American Sugar Alliance is the national coalition of growers, processors, and refiners of sugarbeets and sugarcane.  Roney has been with ASA since 1996 and represents ASA on matters of domestic and trade policy.  He has testified at numerous Congressional and Executive Branch hearings, spoken at many international conferences, and appeared frequently on television and radio programs on behalf of American sugar producers. He has served as chairman of the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Sweeteners and Sweetener Products, a private sector trade policy advisory group formed by the U.S. government, and as president of the Sugar Club, an international industry group based in New York City. His 46-year career in agricultural policy has spanned nine Farm Bills.

Prior to joining the ASA, Roney served for seven years as Washington representative for the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association and for 15 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, including stints with USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service, Economic Research Service, and World Agricultural Outlook Board. Earlier, he taught mathematics at Father Judge High School in Philadelphia.

Roney holds bachelor’s degrees in political science and German from Fordham University, where he co-captained the varsity swimming and water polo teams. His undergraduate studies included a year at the University of Cologne, Germany. Roney has earned two master’s degrees: in public affairs journalism from American University, and in international public policy from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. A native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Roney resides in Vienna, Virginia, with his wife, Deborah; they have two grown children, Kyle and Alison.

José Orive

José Orive is currently the Executive Director of the International Sugar Organization, a post he assumed in January 2014.

Previously Mr Orive was the Executive Director of the Central American Sugar Association (AICA) for 19 years, where he was responsible for negotiations for the the private sugar industry, with emphasis on coordination of    joint actions on priority issues, clearinghouse for information relevant to the sector, publications, participation in international forae.

Since 2010 he also was a partner in ARTLEX law firm in charge of large corporate clients, distribution contracts and environmental issues and arbitration.  He has also held senior posts in other law firms in Guatemala.

Soon after graduating from Georgetown University Law Centre in Washington in 1985 Mr Orive took up the post of Minister Counselor for Economic & Commercial Affairs, Embassy of   Guatemala, Washington, D.C.

Mr Orive is married with two sons.

Mulhim Eltayeb

Mr. Eltayeb has more than 32 years of experience in strategic and operational management,
project initialization, assessment and delivery worldwide. In 2001, he joined Kenana
Engineering and Technical Services company in Sudan, leading the company in various
aspects. For 10 years, 2007 – 2017, he was the General Manager of the company expanding
its business in many countries in East and West Africa in engineering and project delivery
consulting services in the agribusiness, with focus on sugarcane industry. During his tenure, he
supported various African governments in developing their strategic and long-term plans in
sugar industry in Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Mauritania.

During the nineties, he spent six years with CH2M Hill in the USA, executing various projects
in USA, Canada, South America, Russia, and the Far East.

Currently, he runs his own consulting firm KEPM Projects, providing consulting services in the
sugarcane industry for various companies in Africa and the Gulf Area. He is the co-founder of
the Africa Sugar Development Taskforce Initiative and the current Executive Officer.

He is also, the Agribusiness Strategy Advisor for ICCIA which is the Chamber of Commerce,
Industry and Agriculture for 57 countries around the globe.

He is a PMP, with master’s degree from Washington State University, USA in civil and
environmental engineering and a post-graduate degree in Agribusiness.

Peter de Klerk

Senior Economist, ISO - International Sugar Organization

Peter de Klerk joined the International Sugar Organization as Senior Economist in January 2018.

Initial responsibilities included the analysis of molasses, ethanol and alternative sweetener markets, but since March 2020 he is responsible for the ISO’s sugar research.

He arrived from Itochu Europe where he was responsible for sugar market operations – ranging from analysis, logistics, futures and commercial transactions.

Prior to his four years at Itochu, Peter worked at Armajaro, Czarnikow and ED&F Man in the sugar analysis teams.  During a separate tenure with ED&F Man, he worked in Nigeria and Tanzania trading a range of commodities – sugar, ethanol. cocoa and cashew nuts.

Plinio Nastari

Dr. Nastari holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Agricultural Economics, from Iowa State University.

Was Professor of Economics at FGV – The Getúlio Vargas Foundation, in São Paulo, in undergraduate and graduate level courses (MBA, Masters and Doctoral programs) from 1984 to 2001.

Member of PAPSAC, the Private and Public, Scientific, Academic and Consumer Food Policy Group, at Harvard University, in Cambridge, MA, USA, since 2012.

Professor at the MBA in Agribusiness Joint Programme established between ESPM in São Paulo and Université de Nantes, France, since 2015.

Former Executive Director and President of the Board of the Brazilian Association of Automotive Engineers (AEA), from 2000 to 2002, during the 1980s he helped the design of ethanol specifications which enabled the use of ethanol in fuel injected engines.

He has served as member of the Technical Committees of Brazil’s Interministerial Council on Sugar and Alcohol, National Energy Commission, and Commission for Reexam of the Energy Matrix. He has assisted the Brazilian government in Energy Planning (1984-86 and 1991-93), industry deregulation (1997-1999), trade negotiations (1991-2004), and trade disputes.

Representative of the Civil Society Specialist in Energy at the National Council on Energy Policy, at the Federal Government of Brazil, designated for the period of 2016 to 2018, and reassigned until 2020.

With extensive experience in trade negotiations and trade disputes at the International Trade Commission and the World Trade Organization, Dr. Nastari has acted before the Brazilian Government as Chief Economist in the trade disputes involving ethanol exports to the United States (US ITC), and subsidized sugar exports from the European Union, European Union bananas import regime, and Brazilian regime for the import of used and retreaded tires (WTO).

He is Arbitrator at the “Camara FGV de Arbitragem” (Arbitration Chamber of the Getulio Vargas Foundation), and at “Camara de Conciliação e Arbitragem da Sociedade Rural Brasileira”) and has acted as Expert Testimony in many cases, at this Chamber and at ICC, the International Chamber of Commerce, in Paris.

Lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – Second Assessment Report (2AR), and Consultant for Biomass Energy other than Wood, to the World Energy Council.

Co-founder and Member of the Sustainable Biofuels Consensus (Bellagio Consensus), Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, Bellagio, Italy, 2008, and Participant of the Bled Strategic Forum, since 2008 in Bled, Slovenia.

Thierry Songeur

Managing Director, Groupe Sucres & Denrées (Sucden)

After graduating from Rouen Business School in 1983, Thierry Songeur began his career in auditing with Coopers and Lybrand in France and then in banking with Banco Frances & Brasileiro in Brazil.

He joined the Sucden Group in Brazil in 1986 and served in the rice trading division from 1988 until 1992. After a short spell with Gyma International (France), he rejoined Sucden in 1995 at its Paris headquarters covering various sugar markets in Eastern Europe and Africa.

In 1997, Thierry Songeur was appointed President and CEO of Sucden Americas and relocated in Miami / USA. He remained in that position until 2018, contributing to the redevelopment of the Group presence in the Americas. He became member of the Management  Board in 2010.

He was promoted Managing Director of the Sucden Group in January 2019 and moved back to Paris.
